Waray-waray is my parent’s language. My siblings can speak and understand it. Their children can only understand it. My son and I have to reclaim it through classes and effort. Slowly, with each generation, our language is being forgotten. For this piece, the words are from a poem turned into a song called “Kon harapit na an adlaw matunod” from the Philippines. The words in the piece translate to, “When the sun is about to set and you are far away…” and were originally written by the Waray poet Illuminado Lucente in the poem “Dinumdom Ko Ikaw”—
